The overall purpose of the Act is to transform the debt collection system in South Africa by keeping the Registered Debt Collectors accountable and promoting a culture of good governance within the profession and protecting the public at large as well as the creditors.

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) was established as the regulator under the National Credit Act and is responsible for the regulation of the South African credit industry.

The Act requires the Regulator to promote the development of an accessible credit market, particularly the needs of the previously disadvantage and low income persons.

The NCR is also tasked to ensure that all credit providers, debt counselors and credit bureau are registered and comply with the Act.
